Biogenic Carbon
‘Biogenic carbon’ is the term used to describe carbon related to the natural carbon cycle, as well as those resulting from the Combustion, harvest, digestion, Fermentation, decomposition or processing of biologically based materials. Through the process of photosynthesis CO2 is captured from the atmosphere and the biogenic carbon is stored as new plant material. When the Biomass is used for Bioenergy and combusted the biogenic carbon is released back to the atmosphere as CO2. Bioenergy can be low-carbon as long as the Biomass resources used for Bioenergy continue to be produced/ grown.
