Case Study 2 - Heat from UK Agricultural Crop Residues

This bioenergy GHG calculator tool presents LCA analyses results for different scenarios where heat bioenergy is generated from UK agricultural crop residues such as straws. Straw biomass is harvested from the land, processed into chips or bales and used to fuel biomass heating systems.

  • Bioenergy heat GHG intensities are compared to the UK’s sustainability standard for bioheat
  • Energy used to process the biomass fuels will affect the total GHG emissions
  • The extent that straw resource is either collected from the land or ploughed back into the soils will influence land emissions and sustainability
  • Low energy GHG intensities may not necessarily equate to high sustainability performances
  • Biogenic carbon emissions are not included within the calculations.
