Biomethane

Bioenergy Fuels & Products

Biogas is the mixture of gases produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen (anaerobically). It generally consists of 55–80% CH4 and the remainder being mostly CO2 and trace amounts of other gases such as Hydrogen, nitrogen, and water vapor. Biogas can be produced from Biomass feedstocks such as agricultural waste, manure, municipal waste, plant material, Sewage, green waste or food waste.

Biogas can be combusted directly within gas boilers to produce heat or within combined heat and power (CHP) systems to produce both heat and electricity. Biogas may also be ‘scrubbed’ to remove the CO2 and other substances to produce biomethane, that can in turn be utilised in place of natural gas, as a transport fuel or injected into the national gas grid.
