New to Bioenergy?

Bioenergy is the term used to describe the generation of energy from organic materials (biomass). Biomass stores energy from the sun; combustion or conversion of biomass materials releases this energy.

Bioenergy may be generated from any organic material, the predominant biomass fuels (feedstocks) widely used include: wood, wastes, agricultural residues (e.g. straws), agricultural wastes (e.g. manures) and crops grown specifically for energy end-uses (energy crops).

About the Supergen Bioenergy Hub

The Supergen Bioenergy Hub works with academia, industry, government and societal stakeholders to develop sustainable bioenergy systems that support the UK’s transition to an affordable, resilient, low-carbon energy future.


Our Research

Our research is divided into four topic groups, each with their own aims and objectives.

Resources

Aim: To research the different categories biomass resources that can be used as feedstocks to fuel bioenergy technologies. In the UK key resource opportunities for the bioenergy sector include waste materials and specifically grown energy crops. The focus of our research is to explore different options to supply resources to the bioenergy sector without negatively impacting food production and maximising local environmental and global climate benefits.

Pre-treatment and conversion

Aim: To research and develop different technologies that convert biomass resources into bio-products, biofuels and bioenergy. The Topic Group has three core themes focusing on bioenergy feedstock pre-treatment processes, catalysis conversion and pyrolysis conversion technologies.

Vectors

Aim: To analyse the changing bio-product, biofuels and bioenergy requirements of the UK, and assess the extent that the UK bioenergy sector can balance these demands. The focus of the Topic Group is to identify the optimal bioenergy technology options for producing energy and products taking consideration the environment, economic and social performances.

Systems

Aim: To assess the wider role and sustainability of bioenergy and how bioenergy systems may be developed to complement broader energy systems and related sectors. The focus of the Topic Group is to explore the potential impact and benefits of bioenergy systems on the energy trilemma - affordability, resilience and carbon reduction.
